Directors Arni&Kinski collaborated with musician and fellow Icelander Jónsi to stage Fuglastrákur, a photo exhibition held at New York’s Honey Space gallery on May 7th. The show featured eight large-format photographs and a video installation shot in Iceland for the Sigur Ros frontman’s first solo video “Go Do”.

The project is the latest in a series of collaborations between the singer and Arni&Kinski, who are repped in the US by aWHITELABELproduct. The finished “Go Do” video played in super slow motion in one room, and in the main gallery the photos were presented in the round. The show was followed by a reception that attracted a mix of fans, music industry types and ad creatives. Check out a few photos of the installation below and watch the “Go Do” video in the screening room.

Brickyard VFX christened the opening of its newly-expanded Santa Monica studio space with a wrestling match that also marked the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo (May 5th).

Underground wrestling outfit Lucha Lords unleashed mayhem in a ring set up right outside Brickyard’s studio as partiers shouted “Beso Beso” (’Kiss Kiss’ - when Luchadores hold each other too close) and “Cabron” (’Asshole’). The party also featured a mariachi band, Mexican grub from an east Los Angeles taco truck, hand-crafted shot glasses made from ice, a mustache artist and photo booth. Ad agency Sid Lee officially opened the doors on a new outpost in the French capital with a launch party on May 6th.  The new office, located at 12 rue du Sentier in the 2nd arrondissement, is led by managing partner and creative director Sylvain Thirache, CEO Johan Delpuech and agency co-founder Bertrand Cesvet and will handle creative duties for Ubisoft, beer brand Kronenbourg 1664, Eurostar, Grimbergen, Mondial de l’automobile and Coca-Cola. Sid Lee was founded in Montreal in 1997 and expanded into Europe by opening in Amsterdam in 2008 and in Paris this past March.

The party attracted around 700 revelers including Sid Lee staffers from the Montreal and Amsterdam offices and featured a live performance by the band Fortune. Check out a few photos from the event below.

Drinks were poured, winning work was shown and awards were handed out at the 11^th annual First Boards Awards party in New York on May 5^th. The intimate, invite-only party was made possible by our generous hosts, post-production and editorial houses Absolute Post and Final Cut, who graciously donated the stunning studio space.

The industry was well represented with guests from Mother, McCann, Smuggler, MassMarket, Strawberry Frog, JWT, BBDO, droga5, Buck, and Spotwelders, among others. After the awards ceremony, emceed by Boards staff writer Christine Clarke, the party was kept jumping with karaoke renditions of classic favorites and a live jam session featuring the musical stylings of the Final Cut crew.

Last month Boards gave you a peek inside our Boards Summit Europe afterparty hosted by Sizzer Amsterdam. But before the afterparty revelry there was some serious learning going on at the event.

Some of Adland’s top thinkers joined us on March 24 inside the Beurs van Belage in Amsterdam for a day of industry insights and creative inspiration, including Apologue founder Tali Krakowsky, If We Ran The World founder/CEO Cindy Gallop, Digital Domain EVP/president commercial division Ed Ulbrich and Burt CEO Gustav von Sydow.

Ad execs in dire need of more quality time in the company play room had a chance to rekindle their sense of wonder after hours at the latest edition of Q Department’s popular Directors Series cocktail party, held on April 29 at the music shop’s New York studio.

An invite-only salon session that celebrates the director as an auteur of experiences, past Director Series hosts have included Tom Kuntz, Keith Schofield, Marco Brambilla and Joseph Kosinski. This month’s guest host was The Sweet Shop director Mr. Hide, who arrived with an entourage of adult babies, pacifying party favors and limited edition “Sense of Wonder” t-shirts.  His music choices were eclectic to say the least: a playlist of neo-nursery rhymes and baby beats successfully soothed revelers into a nascent state, as evidenced by the many photos of partiers wearing baby bonnets below.

Paris-based production company Wanda held its second directors showcase event, la crème de la crème (”the best of the best”) at Paris’ school of cinema, FEMIS, on April 16th. This year was all about showcasing the work of the Spy Films directors that Wanda recently signed for representation in the French market: Ben Steiger Levine, Trevor Cawood and Arev Manoukian. The prodco also took the opportunity to show off some of its recent spots.

Ben Steiger Levine was supposed to fly in to be on hand for the event as its special guest. But the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano played havoc with air travel and the Montreal-based director’s flight was unfortunately cancelled.

Nevertheless, Wanda shared some photos from the event so Steiger Levine and Boards readers can see what they missed.

Post house Smoke & Mirrors, New York feted the arrival of its new color grading system with a packed house at its Soho studio on April 22nd.  Party-goers warmed up with cocktails followed by an evening of elbow-rubbing, interactive entertainment and dancing.

The Color Revolution party followed a week-long series of demonstrations of the new workflow and system to agencies, production companies and editorial houses, all led by Smoke & Mirrors’ head of color, Ben Eagleton.

The spring award show season kicked off on Wednesday, April 7 with the 2010 ANDY Awards, held at The Times Center in New York. The evening’s big winner was Replay, a documentary-style branded content series from sports drink  Gatorade and TBWA\Chiat\Day, Los Angeles, which took home the GRANDY prize in the earned media category. The ongoing series, which started out as five webisodes and is now in its second season on Fox Sports Net, restages classic high school sports games 15 years after the fact.
