Several directing talents with commercial connections picked up golden statuettes at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Leading the pack was dark horse favorite The Hurt Locker, an independently-produced Iraq war drama directed by RSA Films-repped Kathryn Bigelow. The film took home six Oscars including Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay. Last July, Boards interviewed Bigelow about making the film and her return to the commercial fold with RSA. Read it here.
The Hurt Locker's main rival was, of course, James Cameron's box office smash Avatar. The film won three awards including best visual effects and best cinematography for Mauro Fiore, who is represented as a commercial director/DP by Independent Media, Santa Monica. Last week, Boards spoke with Tim Keene, executive VFX producer with Framestore, one of several companies that worked on the film's ground-breaking 3D effects. Read the interview here.
In the short form categories, Park Pictures director Joachim Back took home the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film for The New Tenants, a gritty drama about a pair of apartment dwellers who unwittingly find themselves caught up in a bloodbath. The was edited by the Whitehouse Post's Russell Icke and the cast includes Vincent D'Onofrio and Liane Balaban. Check out our interview with Back here and the trailer here.
Finally, the Best Animated Short Film award went to Logorama, a bombastic action-spoof completely comprised of corporate logos. We posted exclusive sketeches and storyboards from the film in our Behind The Scenes blog, courtesy of the film's three directors, Ludovic Houplain, Françoiss Alaux and Hervé de Crécy. Houplain is represented by Stink as H5 and Alaux and de Crécy are repped as a duo by Little Minx. The film also features music by Human.
