Directors Neill Blomkamp and Joachim Back, French collective h5 and RSA Films-repped feature filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow are among the commercial talents up for Academy Awards this year. The nominations for the 82nd annual award show were announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles Tuesday morning.
Bigelow's war drama The Hurt Locker and James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic Avatar led the field with 9 nominations, including best director and picture nods, followed by Quentin Tarantino's World War II film Inglourious Basterds with eight noms and Lee Daniels' melodrama Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push' by Sapphire with six nods.
This year marks the first time since 1943 that the Academy has nominated more than five films for best picture. The other nominated films are Neill Blomkamp's District 9, Up, Inglourious Basterds, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, A Serious Man, An Education and Precious.
Though a best director nod eluded Blomkamp, the Spy Films/RSA Films/Stink-repped director shared a best adapted screenplay nomination with Terri Tatchell and the gritty alien action flick picked up nominations for best visual effects and film editing.
In the best animated short film category, French directing collective h5 scored a nomination for Logorama, a raucous animated action-adventure set in a city composed entirely of corporate logos. The film screened during the Boards Summit in New York last fall.
"People don't realize they're facing another reality behind the smiling icons they see everyday," co-director François Alaux told Boards last year. "You can drill for oil but have a green and yellow flower logo, [making people] feel like they're in a field full of flowers. That's no more and no less the kind of trick that we used in Logorama - this time not to tell a happy and smiling story."
Following Logorama's UK premiere last summer, h5's members parted ways. Alaux and Herve de Crecy have since joined the roster at Little Minx as a duo and Ludovic Houplain continues to direct under the h5 moniker.
Park Pictures director Joachim Back shared a best live action short film nomination with producer Tivi Magnusson for The New Tenants, a dark comedy starring Vincent D'Onofrio that was produced by commercial prodco Park Pictures and M&M Productions. Watch the trailer here.
In the cinematography category, Tool of North America director/DP Robert Richardson was nominated for his work on Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
