A Different Route

Scion switches formats for Easy 10 film fest

For the third installment of Scion's annual Easy 10 film festival, the auto brand decided to partner with 10 media outlets to search for up-and-coming filmmakers to feature in this year's program.

RE:UP magazine, one of the 10 publications associated with the series, enlisted designer Josh Hassin to produce the exquisite corpse-style short "Boxed." The idea to create the 15-minute short was modeled after the collaborative two-page design spread in every issue of RE:UP where one artist ends, and another picks up and continues. Hassin not only produced the overall film, but worked with his creative partner Matt Goldman - collectively known as Akjak - to direct one of the pieces "Suspicious Package." The film also features shorts directed by Labour, EVAQ, Miguel Vega, Claire Carre, and Destroy Rock Music.

"Scion left it really open with no limitations," said Hassin on creating the film. "They told me I could make whatever I wanted as long as it was 15 minutes long, and engaging. We wanted to somehow integrate RE:UP in the film, so we came up with the idea to use a box as the common object between each piece because the issues of the magazine are shipped in these cardboard boxes."

Hassin passed along the openness of creating the film to the directors, with only one limitation; each creative piece had to begin and end with the cardboard box. The directors were not in contact with each other during the filming of their shorts, and were only supervised by Hassin throughout the process to ensure that each segment was totally different.

When choosing the artists to work on the film, Hassin tapped directors and animators he admired, as well as up-and-comers to help give them leverage in the industry. Much like the purpose of the Easy 10 series - created to support the filmmaking industry - Hassin's goal was to unearth young directing talent, and increase their exposure to the world.

The move from design to production was easy for Hassin who says he's always looking to try his hand at different projects. "Doing this kind of work in the magazine was natural," said Hassin of the exquisite corpse style, "so it was only logical to take it to CG animated film."

"Boxed" premiered along with the other films at the special screening put on by Scion in New York on January 22, 2009 and screened again in Los Angeles on February 3. Each of the participating filmmakers are supported throughout the series with an Easy 10 compilation DVD, launch parties and trips to two film festivals of their choice.

Scion has previously worked with the ten media outlets associated with the Easy 10 series, sponsoring events such as Frank151's Far Eastern Conference Japanese Art Show in March 2006 and the sixth annual Vice Photo Show in July 2008. They have previously done events catering to the music and art scene, and the new format of the Easy 10 series provides a space for up-and-coming filmmakers to meet and showcase their work.

Although Hassin attended the L.A. screenings in the past, this was the first time he participated in the Easy 10 series. With only three months and a modest budget provided by Scion to work with, the films featured in this year's screenings prove, that, "It's what you do with your creativity and not the money that counts," concludes Hassin.
