The Boards Creative Workshop hits LA

The Freud Playhouse at picturesque center of learning UCLA was the backdrop for another Boards master class in creativity, with the latest installment in the Creative Workshop Series in Los Angeles, sponsored by Human Worldwide, Wiredrive, Digit and Raleigh Studios.
If the ultimate test of creativity is to be resourceful in the face of adversity, Boards was, ahem, challenged when the event's scheduled keynote speaker had to pull out. Some fast thinking and a dash of serendipity saw a minor crisis averted with the insertion of preeminent creativity expert, author and knight Sir Ken Robinson. Robinson didn't disappoint, delivering an extraordinarily erudite, funny, and passionate speech on nurturing creative potential within individuals, education and business that was rapturously received.
TAG, San Francisco creative directors Scott Duchon and John Patroulis, creators of the Cannes Grand Prix-winning Halo 3 integrated campaign, had the admittedly difficult task of following Sir Ken. They were more than up to it, providing a detailed, absorbing look at the creative and production process behind a genuinely paradigm-shifting campaign, made successful, the creators stressed, by a singularity of idea across myriad executions.
If the audience was not already stimulated enough, Deutsch, LA CCO Eric Hirshberg then moderated a boisterous and robust discussion about the thorny issue of artistic authenticity in advertising alongside Beautiful Losers director Aaron Rose, Flux founder Jonathan Wells and local street artist Robbie Conal. The latter's politically-charged work and pointed comments proved a thought-provoking counterpoint to Rose's thoughts on the uneasy way in which counter-culture artists come to terms with mainstream success.
No less informative was Tali Krakowsky from Imaginary Forces, who showcased the finest in the emerging field of experience design. With dazzlingly inventive examples from cutting-edge installation artists and experiential design companies from around the world, her 40 multi-media examples delivered in 40 minutes explored the huge range of possibilities and new ways of engaging consumers that this field offers.
To round out the day, Boards editor Rae Ann Fera moderated a creative cogitation of the workshop's content with a panel comprised of the event's advisory board: Harvest EP Bonnie Goldfarb, Deutsch head of integrated production Tom Dunlap, TBWA\Media Arts Lab creative director Scott Trattner and Human Worldwide founder Marc Altshuler. The discussion touched on working with unglamorous brands, instilling creativity into clients and the changing face of the business.
Über-swish restaurant Campanile, built by none other than Charlie Chaplin himself, proved a beautiful setting for Wiredrive's pre-event dinner. And Raleigh Studios' New York street set provided a wonderfully dramatic setting for the event's bustling closing party, neatly bookending another day of creative higher learning.
