  • HP PAINT A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE> We've seen countless spots that delve into the circuitry of a working machine, but very few that illustrate the benefits of those machines in a useful, translatable way. Created and directed by west coast production lab Motion Theory, the latest from Hewlett-Packard uses a combination of live-action footage and painterly animation to conjure up a surrealist world that somehow still feels wonderfully ordered. Devised to sell HP's latest line of servers, "It Consolidates" eschews the sleek, clinical look of most tech ads in favor of something more vibrant and colorful. In addition to being immensely more entertaining as a result, the ad subtly communicates the benefits of a strong technological infrastructure in a natural, organic way, something those of us tired to pieces by the post-Hacker 0s and 1s aesthetic are happy to see. • DEAR FRUIT ROLL UP PEOPLE, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?> Like homeless dogs that were never neutered, teenage boys basically spend their every waking hour scavenging for bad food and humping things - the latest from MJZ's Rocky Morton shows us what can happen when those two base instincts collide. "Art Center" depicts a hormonally-ravaged teenage boy pulling the object of his desire into an art classroom, where he attempts to woo her by way of a bust made entirely out of Starburst. It looks nothing like her, of course, but there's no convincing him of that. While he lovingly and breathlessly lists the bust's many standout features, she watches in frozen horror. Finally, he's so overwhelmed by the carnal, fruity lust in his loins that he proceeds to hit a leftfield single (first base) avec bust right in front of her. Disgusting, bawdy and absolutely hilarious, this is the weirdest thing we laughed at all week. View the spot: Art Center

  • WHAT KIND OF HAIR IS IN MY DRINK HOLDER?> You just want to buckle up on the back of a big, hairy beastie after seeing "Keep it on all fours" by Daniel Kleinman out of Kleinman Productions. Yeehaaw! Thank you Esuvee Safety Campaign and BBH, New York. It also makes us want to see Urban Cowboy and even caused a discomforting hot flash of that Luke what's-his-name movie about bull riding. Finally. A fun SUV commercial that shows the benefits of ridin' the beast in the way it was meant to be rode. Yup. Anyway, Framestore CFC, London deserves a lot of credit for the furry magic. Those car creatures were almost as wacked as the worgs in LOTR and even more believable. I really felt like I was riding one, the way it rolled over in to the dust like a mule in heat. Maybe Disney will get in the game and open up a theme park ride. [Editor's note: Well, no one told me it was a PSA. How was I supposed to know? It looked f#&in' cool.] View the spot: Esuvee Safety Campaign
