Quiznos gets quirkier

Ads catapult Veitch brothers' spongmonkey to national stardom

Quiznos' latest two-spot campaign proves there's no shame in borrowing someone else's idea, particularly when that idea is totally and hilariously whacked out.

The Martin Agency of Richmond, VA, has introduced two guitar-playing 'spongmonkeys' who look like furry marsupials and screech "We Love The Subs", a song about their love of toasted subway sandwiches, in vaguely Mexican accents.

But the critters were actually created by two London brothers who clearly share one twisted mind.

Joel and Alex Veitch's website, rathergood.com, features all sorts of homemade animated creatures, running the gamut from goose-stepping kittens to "some extremely naughty, very, very rude little hedgehogs". They all spew rather offbeat ditties. The spongmonkeys appeared on rathergood in January with their first song, "We Like The Moon" - the blueprint for "We Love The Subs".

Agency creatives Ty Harper and Raymond McKinney contacted the Veitches, who loved the idea of the ads. They supplied a new animation sequence and music track and sent them to Richmond-based edit shop Greybox.

Aside from some gratuitous product shots, the spongmonkeys in the Quiznos commercials look and sound exactly the same as they do on the website, begging the question: what did the agency do? Not that we're knocking this unique effort. The more spongmonkeys and dictator-kittens on our TV screens, the better.

We strongly suggest Quiznos license the little critters for merchandising as we want a spongmonkey on our desk. Now!
