From Blue to Blimp
London-based music video prodco/directing team Blue Source has cleared the confusion. No longer working under the same name, its production arm, Blue Source Films, has become Colonel Blimp. However, directors Rob Leggatt and Leigh Marling will continue to roll tape as Blue Source.
Named after the duo's favorite flick, the 1945 classic The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the move signifies a conscious growth strategy for the one-year-old company, including plans to segue into the spot production arena.
"Some other directors wanted to join Blue Source Films but felt that if Rob and Leigh continued to direct as Blue Source and had Blue Source Films, they'd look like juniors," says partner John Hassay. "We decided we needed a title that would let us grow," he adds, joking that his name suggestion was Snuff Movies. "They were having none of it."
Currently producing music videos only, Colonel Blimp is repped for commercials through Blink, also of London. Hassay says he's on the hunt for new directors, but is keeping mum about any potential leads.
But he makes no bones about the fact that the goal for the Blimp is to become independent and move into spot production.
"We're looking to move into commercials. Because Blink takes care of us for them and knows we're going to go independent at some stage, they have a stake in the company." The affiliation with Blink will also see the Blimp land in La La Land in the near future. Blink is currently applying renos to a Venice Beach locale with room enough for Colonel Blimp.
For now, the commercial horizon depends on two things: money and people. "We need to find the right person to take us into commercials," says Hassay. "It's tricky because people who do that normally want huge salaries and we need to make a bit of money before we can pay huge salaries."
In the meantime, they're keeping the operation small.
"Some people think you're mad for opening something these days, but then you look at companies like Smuggler who are small, doing great work and not trying to be huge. That's the sort of thing we're aiming to do - not be massive, just do the right things."
The Colonel Blimp video roster consists of Blue Source, Lynn Fox, Doug Avery, Seb Janiak, Dougal Wilson, Henrik Bulow, Mark Tappin, Laurence Easeman, Jonathan De Villiers and Gus Gus.
