Bob Industries Signs Altar Boy Peter Care
by: Jul 18, 2000 Print

Bicoastal Bob Industries has wooed director Peter Care from his former perch at Satellite. The commercial director is currently editing his first feature film "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" and will resume shooting commercials by year's end.

After nearly nine years at Satellite, Care says the move to a smaller facility reflects a desire to simplify his life.

"I've always wanted to be at a company with friends. I like the feeling of camaraderie and teamwork and that's hard to do at a big company," says Care. "I've had some good times at Satellite. I remember Spike Jonze first starting out and I felt that kind of camaraderie and the excitement of seeing someone grow as a director. I just want a friendly atmosphere with people that I feel are more like my peers."

"We're thrilled to have him," says Bob executive producer Chuck Ryant. "When we started this company over a year ago, if there was one person who was really on our wish list that we could ever be in business with it was someone like Peter if not Peter himself."

Ryant and partner TK Knowles first met the director in 1991 while working at McCann, New York. Moving from the agency side to production, Ryant and Knowles continued to track the director's career.

"Creatively there's this wonderful sense of humanity and honesty as an overall quality to his work," says Ryant . "It's the way that people are treated and the way that they react and respond to things that just seems very right as an approach to filmmaking."

"What I think is unique about Peter is that he's not only conceptually-driven but his film has an honesty," concurs Knowles. "His styling, his casting, it's something that people can relate to and that's why he's been so successful."

Care first caught the attention of the commercial production community with his work on a Levi's 501 campaign. "Prague" told the story of a young guy who uses his Levi's as currency, swapping his jeans for a car.

Among Care's more recent commercial projects are "Virtual Ride" for Saturn; "Foosball" and "Scooter" for Polaroid; and "Grand Canyon," "Waterfall," and "Tulsa" for Best Western.

"The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" is being produced by Jodie Foster's company Egg Pictures. The DP on the project is Lance Acord, the cameraman behind "Being John Malkovich."
