JSM Reps Composer/Guitarist David Torn

Composer/guitarist David Torn, successful for scoring movie soundtracks and performing as the primary texturalist and/or soloist on films, is embarking on a new creative outlet for his edgy techno sound as a commercial composer with JSM.

Torn has been an instrumentalist on recordings for K.D. Lang, Jewel, Jane Siberry, Chocolate Genius, Michael Shrieve, among others and continues to offer his expertise as a consultant to musical instrumental manufacturers. He looks forward to applying his self-named "technorganic" sound to the commercial world.

"It almost seems painfully perfect to me because in my own work, my own writing, for my own material I work with very short snippets of music," explains Torn. "I start all compositions as cels and they can be three seconds long up to a few minutes in length. But the initial cels end up being about a minute long. These are the beginnings of pieces that end up being 15 or 20 minute pieces; but it's very natural for me to A: like short, or start short and B: to look at pictures and write. So it seems like (this world) will be a pretty nice marriage for me."

Torn believes that his "unusual blend of very technological and very organic sounding music" is a perfect fit for many of the commercials he has seen recently.

"I have a desire to be involved with the commercials that are presenting themselves as products that are meant for a current and modern and future market place," explains Torn. "And it seems to me having done a kind of a study of this stuff...that these are mostly the car companies, dot-coms and financial services."

Torn is also excited to see what he thinks is a European and Japanese influence making its way into commercial production.

"I'm seeing an awful lot of commercials that are presenting their products with less of a heavy hype and pitch and much more of a kind of developed esthetic both visually and musically," says Torn. "So I think I'm kind of in a perfect place right now for this."
