Spike Jonze's robotic indie rock scenesters

Director Spike Jonze made a high-profile return to advertising earlier this year with I’m Here, an Absolut Vodka-sponsored short film about a pair of low-tech robot lovers living in Los Angeles. Produced through MJZ and TBWA\Los Angeles, the director had free reign to imagine – as the film’s subtitle states – a “love story in an Absolut World.” The soundtrack was composed by Sam Spiegel of Squeak E. Clean Productions and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, who produced original songs for the fictional indie band The Lost Trees, which also co-stars. For his part, Spiegel composed six pieces, balancing acoustic guitar tracks with otherworldly robotic music recorded entirely on analogue synths from the ’70s. “[Spike] just knew he wanted it to feel somewhat robotic and mechanical but also very organic and have lots of feeling to it, because he’s all about emotions,” says Spiegel. “I think there is a nice balance between feeling a little bit sci-fi, while still having a very grounding emotion to it.” Q
