Boards Summit interview: Aaron Rose
Curator/director reveals how to have fun, get paid and change the world

The second director/independent curator Aaron Rose took the podium to discuss the creation of cultural experiences in collaboration with brands at this year's Boards Summit, he decided that the seminar title, "Integrated Branding and the Immersive Cultural Experience" was a bit too highbrow. Instead, he chose the much more inclusive, and decidedly less technical, "How to have fun, get paid and change the world".
"I always try to look for projects that offer a window into creating something that does enter into the world in a beneficial way," says Rose. "I like to get into the fabric of people's lives, into the fabric of culture and build a better world while at the same time selling whatever it is we have to sell."
Rose announced his latest world-changer: a DIY creative high school in Los Angeles, called Make Something. The after-school and weekend program benefits students from underprivileged neighborhoods, regardless of academic merit.
"The kids who are the worst students tend to be the best artists," quips Rose, who is repped by The Directors Bureau.
Rose partnered with the Kanye West Foundation and with artists from a diverse range of disciplines - directors Mike Mills and Spike Jonze, singers Karen O and Lady Gaga, designer Shepard Fairey and performing artist Miranda July - who will make up the teaching staff.
Rose sat down with Boards' Christine Clarke to give a few pointers on how to have fun, get paid and change the world, as well as to discuss the Make Something initiative and his latest documentary, Become a Microscope: 90 Statements on Sister Corita, which was part of the Summit screening series.
