Following the experiential design panel at the 2009 Boards Summit, we sat down with artist, designer and technologist Joshua Davis to talk about the inspiration behind his generative art iPhone app Reflect and find out the ways in which digital designs can manifest in the physical world.
Davis' Reflect app allows users to design randomly-generated, kaleidescopic patterns and was partially borne of his desire to merge the physical with virtual in order to create a "mobile art experience" with no other purporse than pure pleasure.
"It was basically this idea of going digital to physical and talking about advancements of technology that have enabled us to take our work off the traditional desktop screen and into physical spaces," he says. "While the iPhone is still a screen, it's in your pocket."
Davis also laments the lack of an art category in Apple's iTunes app store, talks about his line of bags, and the future of consumer customization.
