Ex-Amber Music composers go solo

Mossman and Bates open Fall On Your Sword
Fall on Your Sword partners Will Bates (left), Phil Mossman and Lucy Alper will teach you a thing or two about the complexities of music production.

Composers Phil Mossman and Will Bates have turned a side-project into a full-time gig. Both veteran producers of London’s dance scene, they formed the glammed-up dance band Fall On Your Sword two years ago while collaborating on the Gold Lion-winning spot Nomis “Damn Boots” at Amber Music, New York.

Feeling the itch to branch out into features, shorts and multi-media projects, the duo left Amber two months ago to start their own New York-based music/audio post house under the Fall On Your Sword moniker with executive producer Lucy Alper.

“There are other strings to our bow and a lot of other things we wanted to explore,” says Mossman, explaining the desire to move beyond simply spot music production. “That model of locking a bunch of people up in a closet and expecting them to churn out good results time after time is a difficult one to get right.”

Based in Williamsburg, their new office is housed in the same building as the Mast Brothers chocolate factory. Cocoa bean bags act as acoustic paneling on the walls of their three recording studios and the scent of fresh chocolate fills the hallways.

Bates and Mossman are in talks with several composers and bands, but insist the roster will remain small to better handle the increasingly wide-ranging creative briefs coming from agencies.

“The new generation of creatives coming through is far more music savvy,” says Mossman. “Their tastes are broader and they want more creativity for their buck. I think knocking it out in two hours on a computer doesn’t really do the job anymore.” Q
