Benjamin Steiger Levine
The soulful surrealist
Benjamin Steiger Levine's ingeniously lo-fi camp video work for eclectic Jewish rapper Socalled culminated late last year in the richly-detailed "You Are Never Alone", a mysterious and memorable clip about a man who transforms into a film projector. Colonel Blimp immediately scooped up the native Montrealer for UK video rep, putting him on the radar in a market crowded with low-budget whiz kids.
"It was surprising because the video was a super labor of love and it grew as I was working on it," he says. "There's something personal about this guy who's forced to project something in spite of himself - kind of like you're forced into your creativity whether you like it or not."
Currently, the 29-year-old is working on a couple of videos and looking to make his mark in advertising. He just signed for Canadian spot rep with boutique Les Enfants and has started meeting with like-minded local creative directors in hopes of raising the creative bar in Quebec's commercial scene.
Describe the moment you knew you wanted to be in film.
It was a slow realization. It kind of grew on me. I was more into writing and drawing as a kid. I think I got into film because it combines so many disciplines and because it's a fantastic escape, both as a process and a finished product, from the everyday grind of things.
Aside from director, what role on a film set would best suit you?
Art director. I love creating different worlds. Props, paint, resin, wood - it's like playtime and in pre-production you always end up in weird places to find what you need.
What's the one essential item that you must have on set?
I tend to ask someone for a cigarette at some point and pretend to smoke it all day. I'm not even a smoker.
What's your favorite YouTube clip?
Old interviews with Hitchcock: "Reality is something none of us can really stand at anytime." Also, "Charleston Style" and the guy who throws ping pong balls into cups [Billy Marks].
What was your last selfless gesture?
Selfless? I'm a director.
