The data has been compiled, the results tallied, and as we sit back and peruse the top winners in our wrap-up of 2007-2008's awards season, a few blanket conclusions can be made: one, judges love clay bunnies as much as they love grotesque aliens hell-bent on annihilating humanity; and two, if you want to top next year's Festival Report Card you might consider making a spot that somehow incorporates a clay alien... that can turn gorillas into candy, all while playing the drums.
After applying our weighted points system to the respective film categories of the AICP, Art Directors Club, Cannes Lions, Clios, Andys, D&AD and the One Show, we arrived at the following list of the most lauded ads, companies, creatives, directors and editors this season.
Sony Bravia "Play-Doh" claimed the top spot, with Microsoft Xbox Halo 3's "Diorama" coming in a close second. Skittles "Touch" and Cadbury "Gorilla" rounded out the top five. Together, these four spots set the tone across the board with their teams battling it out for the top slots.
Juan Cabral swept the creative director, art director and copywriter categories thanks to both "Gorilla" and "Play-Doh". T.A.G./McCann Worldgroup, SF's Hannah Murray nabbed top agency producer on the strength of Halo 3's "Believe" TV and webfilm campaign as did Peepshow Post's Andrea MacArthur in the editor category.
Both "Touch" and "Diorama" played the largest roles in vaulting MJZ to the top of both the Global and North American Prodco lists, making it the company's third year at the list's pole position. Gorgeous, London also achieved a three-peat as Top Prodco in the international category. MJZ directors Rupert Sanders and Nicolai Fuglsig clocked in first and second, respectively - Sanders with the Halo 3 work; Fuglsig with Top Spots inductee Coca-Cola "It's Mine" and Guinness "Tipping Point", and both for their contributions to the Monster.com work.
The Monster.com campaign brings us to our Top Global and North American Agency, BBDO, which had a massive year with work for HBO, FedEx and AT&T all making it to our Top Campaigns lists.
There's always room for pleasant surprises, and that distinction goes to the cutest ad in the history of cute ads (that won't make you vomit), "Tan Hong Ming" for Petronas, which brought its prodco Malaysia's MHZ Films into the fifth spot in the international prodco list.
Now, without further ado, we present the rest of this season's winners.
