Pangea Day "Tank Driver">Jan Jacobs and Leo Premutico kick off their post-Saatchi careers with a flourish through this simple but provocative spot for Pangea Day, an event which aims to bring awareness to suffering worldwide through a screening of films directed by international filmmakers. Reminiscent of "Points of View" for The Guardian, the premise is beautifully simple: the iconic image of the Tiananmen Square protestor squaring up to the tank, but flipped to the tank driver's perspective. Timely in light of Tibet's recent protests, and brilliantly executed by The Glue Society.

Dunkelziffer "Tentacle">The Vikings take a break from quirky comedy to direct this genuinely chilling, almost unwatchable child abuse PSA. Charting the long-lasting effects of abuse, we follow a young girl from cot to coffin as the specter of child abuse, metaphorically represented by a skin-crawlingly creepy, hairy and mole-covered phallic worm wraps around her. Sensitive direction brings home the pathos while never flinching from the deeply disturbing subject matter. Grimly realistic CG and understated sound design serve to accentuate the dark tone. Disgusting, yet devastatingly effective.

Absolut "Living Room">Given free rein to conjure up an Absolut moment, comedian Zach Galifianakis pens a refreshingly ridiculous men's martini party. A white-robed and beehive-coiffed trio sit down in a soft-focus, '80s-styled living room sipping vodka martinis, while talking innocuously about hot tubs and cold drinks. Absurd dynamics and lo-fi directing combined with male histrionics make for a laugh-out-loud satire of many vodka brands' suave, aspirational but ultimately clichéd brand values. A brave move for Absolut, showing that letting your brand go can yield worthy results.

Writers/Actors: Zach Galifianakis, Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim
Director: Ben Birman

Carlton Draught "Sky Troop">Paul Middleditch's latest for Carlton follows in the self-referential footsteps of "Big Ad" - big beer ad mocks big beer ads - with some gleefully overblown CG slapstick. A shambolic halftime sky-diving troop ejects from a giant pint glass, narrowly avoiding aerial disaster (unbeknownst to the applauding spectators below), while the errant mega-pint causes carnage nearby. Classically earthy Aussie humor, backed by rousing opera (of course), is matched to big VFX that never get in the way of the idea - advertising's grand gestures can very well be stupid.

Tap Project "Donnie">Every parent's nightmare underpins The Perlorian Brothers' latest for Tap Project. A wholesome couple is introduced by their daughter to her new boyfriend: greasy, bread-licking loser Donnie. Disgust turns to grudging admiration as she explains that her beau's providing children around the world with fresh drinking water... but only by drinking tap water. Playing on the universal (if selfish) truth that we all want to be virtuous (but with as little effort as possible), the Perlorians' mastery of the awkward and brilliant casting make for a refreshingly unpreachy, comedic PSA.
