Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design - Finalists

2. Will Johnson > Superfad, Los Angeles
3. Jamie Rockaway > Transistor Studios, New York
4. Sean Dekkers > Oktobor, New Zealand
5. Donnie Bauer > Optimus, Chicago

Will Johnson > Superfad, Los Angeles
Just the facts:
Age - 23; Hometown - Portland, Oregon; Education - BFA at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in 2006; Employ - hired by Superfad in summer, 2006.

Previous Experience: "I was always that little kid who got in trouble for finger-painting on the walls," laughs Johnson about his early taste for drawing. By the time he was a senior in high school, he was into architecture; hence, his choice to attend SCAD. But upon arriving at the renowned design college, "it offered so much more, and I decided I wanted to create design and make it move," he says. "The best way to do that was through motion graphics."

barenaked luck: His first project to make a splash, a mograph-based video for Barenaked Ladies' "Easy" in 2006, was actually part of his thesis at SCAD. A professor at the college, James Gladman, knew a couple of people who worked with the band, and after they saw early work on the project, the green light was given to finish it as an official video. "It was right place, right time."

BEST WORK: With fellow SCAD grad (and FBA winner) Will Campbell, Johnson co-directed Target "Art Connects", and, along with Campbell, was part of the team behind the frenetic "Universe of Entertainment" for PlayStation 3. "[Superfad] definitely gives you the opportunity to just get out there and go," he enthuses.

Jamie Rockaway > Transistor Studios, New York
Just the facts: Age - 25; Hometown - Tulsa, Oklahoma; Employ - interned at Transistor in 2005, promoted to designer/animator in '06, AD in '07.

Previous Experience: Rockaway spent much of his youth skateboarding, which eventually led him to film school. At 16, he obsessively filmed and photographed his friends pulling tricks and became so obsessed with shooting, he gave up the sport. "I got more out of taking a perfect photo and getting the shot on camera than I did landing the actual trick," he says. "My education is pretty much self-taught. [Film school] was just a piece of paper that I got so I'd rather not mention it."

Best Work: Last year he art directed an HP "Hands" ad for Paulo Coelho's Experimental Witch Film Competition, managing the design team, compositing, pulling 3D and animation duties, as well as working on choreography with Goodby AD John Nussbaum. "At first, I didn't really know what an art director was supposed to do, but I had my own interpretation of it," he admits. "I really was just tossed into managing teams and I like that aspect of it the most."

Director-slash-designer: Rockaway's desire to start a high-end fashion label is initially what led him to relocate to New York. When he's not working at Transistor, he operates and designs for Brooklyn-based boutique Love Brigade.
