Dan Maloney > The Whitehouse, New York
Just the facts: Age - 31; Hometown - Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Education - University of North Carolina at Greensboro, BA in Film; Employ - began assisting at The Whitehouse in 2003, promoted to editor in February 2007.

Previous experience: After graduating from school, Maloney made the move to the Big Apple and got a gig as an assistant at Crew Cuts under Chuck Willis in 2000. While there, a call came from director Bennett Miller to assist in a documentary he was shooting about S.N. Goenka, an expert teacher of the Vipassana discipline of meditation. "He was doing a speaking tour in an RV and Bennett rode with him throughout the country and shot about 400 hours of footage," Maloney explains. But just as the project was about to be ready for full-fledged editing, Miller got word that funding had been green-lighted for Capote, and it was effectively shelved. Maloney proceeded to freelance assist at various shops until landing at The Whitehouse in 2003.

Best work: Maloney says the experience of cutting the Cannes Silver Lion-winning "Interview" for Tide-To-Go was an enjoyable one, especially as it gave him the chance to work with director Calle Astrand. "Calle has a really quirky, Scandinavian style of humor that's out there," Maloney says. "It was interesting to hear where he would think the humor was coming from in the spot." We can assume that quirkiness will also come into play in the next round of Tide-To-Go spots that Maloney's expected to be cutting, shot by the Perlorian Brothers and, yes, featuring more of the talking stain.

Future ambitions: While Maloney was interested in the total process of filmmaking upon entering film school, he quickly gravitated towards the relatively solitary vocation of editing and doesn't have a burning desire to direct. As for what he wants to cut, he's comfortable with comedy - as seen through the Tide work, in addition to spots for Dunkin Donuts and the Maryland State Lottery - as well as visual, but is hungry to try anything. "I also enjoy doc-style work, and forging the content as you go along."

Extra-curricular activities: As a native of indie music hotspot Chapel Hill, it's not much of a surprise that Maloney is a music aficionado. Upon moving to New York, he and his then-roommate landed a plum DJ gig at Brooklyn's Union Pool, spinning glam rock and '70s punk. His vinyl collection boasts between 800-1,000 LPs.
