Finalist: Editors
Sam Gunn > The Whitehouse, LONDON
by: Apr 1, 2007 Print

Just the facts: Age - 29; Hometown - Cambridge; Education - work experience in London at agency Bates Dorland; Employ - at The Whitehouse, London since 2000; made editor in 2006.

Previous Experience: After a four-year stint at the in-house A/V department at agency Bates Dorland, Gunn's first experience of The Whitehouse was as a client. "I wrote a short film called Rabbit which won a Vision award at the 1999 BTA Craft awards. Rick Lawley, one of the company founders, cut it." He then assisted top editor Russell Icke for four and a half years.

Best Work: "Joy", for the Nike Joga Bonito campaign. A deceptively simple debut juxtaposing new and archival footage of footballing superstar Ronaldinho. Aptly named too. "It was a joy to cut, you had all this amazing footage and you had to match it together," says Gunn. "It was a pretty simple process but it was really fun too." He's also cut MTV "Idiots" and XFM "Roadies", both directed by fellow FBA finalist Tony Barry.

What might have been: Winning the Vision award, Gunn's thoughts inevitably turned to a career in writing, but watching his film being cut changed all that. "After I saw that I thought this is what I want to do."

Best advice: From Russell Icke: "Take nothing but the best stuff you see, the performances you most believe in as an editor."
