Finalist: Motion Graphic/Design
Paul Schlacter > Trollbäck + Company, NY
by: Apr 1, 2007 Print

Just the Facts: Age - 24; Hometown - born in Norwalk, OH, raised in Nashville, TN; Education - graphic design at the University of Tennessee; Employ - Trollbäck since August 2005.

Previous experience: While in school, Schlacter interned for Knoxville-based design firm The Robin Easter Group. Primarily working in print, a visit to the school from mograph artist Matt Checkowski (then with Imaginary Forces) during Schlacter's junior year piqued his interest in designing for a moving canvas. "He just got me really excited about what could be done with graphic design." Scouting for prospective employers in his senior year, Schlacter was introduced to Trollbäck's Joe Wright by Checkowski.

Best work: Schlacter cites a series of IDs for US cable channel Reelz TV as his strongest work to date. The clips, which apply "How to" manual aesthetics to movie clichés, illustrate Schlacter's fascination with comic book and graphic novel art, as well as his smart, clean design sense. "I illustrated and animated them, so I had a big part in how they came out."

Best part of the job: "Everyone that I've worked with retains a youthful quality. I don't know if that's because we come to work a little bit later or don't have to dress up."

First cartoon character he could draw: "Spiderman. Because of his mask, he was pretty easy."
