Just the facts: Darren Pasemko (29), Johanne Ste-Marie (27), and Mark Lomond (29) formed FH in 1998 while studying film animation at Montreal's Concordia University, signing to Spy Films in Nov. 2006.
Making a name: Fluorescent Hill built a name by scouring the Internet for music they liked and then pitching video concepts to labels. "People tend to trust us more on music videos because there's a kinship," says Ste-Marie. "They're not trying to sell anything other than their music."
Best work: For Album Leaf's "On Our Way" video, FH populated a forest setting with animated sprites that play miniature instruments. The video was a collective effort, but asking them to describe their creation reveals less cohesion. "They're kinda dumb looking," says Ste-Marie. "I've always thought they were like sprightly Sesame Street gods," Pasemko retorts. Adds Lomond: "You're in the woods, and there are bright little gems that blow up."
Fruit styling: Their first spot job was last year for French fruit juice company Delice des Fruits. They were amazed at all the kerfuffle required to wrangle strawberries. "The nicest strawberries aren't the nicest tasting," says Ste-Marie.
