A quickie with an agency producer
Ogilvy & Mather, Toronto head of broadcast Brenda Surminski
What's the most exciting reel you've come across lately?
I want to talk about a favorite spot of mine instead. I love Coke "Happiness Factory". The design is brilliant. The animation was jaw-dropping to watch when I saw it the first time in cinema. It totally communicated the joyful drinking experience.
My own perspective on agency producing...
Technology has changed the role of an agency producer and it's an exciting time to work in an agency. We rely on our suppliers more than ever to help us answer the question, "Can we do this?" I've heard us described as being purveyors of possibilities. I like the sound of that.
The best cost-cutting tip you've picked up over the years?
I'm a supporter of agency creatives who are inclined to direct their own work. While they're compiling their reel by directing their own spots, clients get a great deal.
The best turndown line you've ever heard?
"I'm sorry, the director can't get on the briefing call. He's on a retreat and has taken a vow of silence for the next six months."
The craziest pitch you've ever encountered?
From a European director who wanted to film in vitro along with a live birth. The agency board was about a boy riding a bike.
The buzz word or term you are sick to death of hearing?
"I'm reaching out to you." Makes me crazy. Don't touch me.
What's your favorite indulgence?
I'm alone on a Sunday afternoon. I read a novel for two hours and take a nap. Delicious.
What's your favorite swear word?
What the..... I'm a mother. I've trained myself not to.
What makes you shake your head?
People who take credit for work that isn't theirs.
Your favorite quote on advertising?
Has to be David Ogilvy: "Hire people who are better than you are, leave them to get on with it." As a head of broadcast it's important to hire freelancer producers that can walk in and take on any challenge with good humor and confidence.
Brenda has been head of broadcast at Ogilvy & Mather for the past five years. She began her 20-year career at Leo Burnett and has also worked for Lowe Roche, JWT and Ammarati Puris.
