Sony Bravia "Paint"
With a preview website generating much buzz among the ad industry and public alike, Sony Bravia "Paint" is one of the most eagerly awaited ads of the year. The finished product, boasting explosions of paint soaking an apartment block in Glasgow, doesn't disappoint. Mirroring dazzling fireworks, jets of paint shoot through windows, or erupt like geysers from the ground. True, it lacks the signature song that its predecessor "Balls" had, and we're a bit iffy on the clown, but Glazer's paint job is still a marvel of modern spot-making. (See Spotopsy, pg. 16)

Dove "Evolution"
Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty continues with this exploration of the beauty myth. An attractive woman, devoid of make-up or any fashion frippery, sits in a harsh light and is set upon by a coterie of make-up artists and stylists. Through time-lapse photography, she's transformed into the typical supermodel. But the "evolution" continues as the vantage point shifts to a computer screen, upon which the woman's visage is further manipulated - her neck extended, her face elongated, her eyes enlarged. She becomes a billboard, with any trace of uniqueness airbrushed away. Poignant.

Burger King "Eat Like Snake"
Crispin's cavalcade of craziness for the King continues with this odd spot. Half martial arts flick spoof, half god knows what, the action follows two office workers, one about to tuck into a Triple Whopper. But when the burger-bearing character has to leave the room, his co-worker drops to the floor and proceeds to slither snake-like to the Whopper, dropping his jaw to ridiculous proportions and devouring it whole. Extra points for this weirdfest go to the musical score - a sexy slow jam featuring Barry White's niece singing lyrics such as "Unhinge your jaw." (See Music, pg. 36)

Johnnie Walker "Human"
In keeping with the scotch company's "Keep Walking" slogan promoting forward motion and progress, this cinematic spot features an exquisitely-rendered android ruminating on the nature of being perfect, and conversely, the nature of being human. The android laments that while he possesses immortality, he'd give it up for the ability to feel, love and despair (and presumably, have a few belts of Johnnie). The kicker in the copy? When the android tells us we lowly humans can also possess immortality - by doing "one great thing".

Boots "Gorgeous"
Fashion photog David LaChapelle has a talent for taking beautiful people and putting them in somewhat ridiculous situations - after all, he did helm Christina Aguilera's "Drrrty", placing the starlet in assless chaps and a boxing ring. In this extravagantly glamorous spot for UK retailer Boots, gorgeous models undertake mundane tasks, like stuffing turkeys and peeling brussel sprouts, without losing an iota of their fabulousness (the sprouts are peeled, after all, while lounging in a bathtub). Good, glitzy, campy fun. Interesting fact - the turkey stuffing scene took an entire day to shoot.
