Festival report card
After some serious jetsetting (fun) and a few weeks staring at an impossibly massive Excel document (not fun), we're ready to hammer the proverbial nail in the coffin marked 'Awards Season 2006' with our annual festival report card. Here's how it works: first, we spend countless hours poring over the credits to all the broadcast winners from Cannes, D&AD, AICP, the One Show, Clios, Art Director's Club and Andys; then, we take that information and plug it into an intricate formula that includes complicated mathematical routines such as addition. From there, just a few judicious applications of the sort function and... presto: it's your unofficial who's who of adver-dominance for 2005-06.
Much like Jesus in "Footprints", this year saw the hardware magnet, Guinness' "noitulovE", carry London's AMV.BBDO to a host of top perches, including Top Creative Director (Paul Brazier), Top Copywriter (Ian Heartfield), Top Art Director (Matt Doman), Top Agency Producer (Yvonne Chalkley) and Top Agency Office. Not surprisingly, Sony's "Balls" helped Fallon, London slot firmly into most of the #2 positions, while, despite already using up its Cannes point total last year, Adidas' "Hello Tomorrow" reaffirmed its dominance by hanging in to grab our coveted bronze. Meanwhile, led by the dual-pronged action of its San Francisco and New York offices, TBWA took Global Agency plaudits with ease.
On the production front, MJZ cruised to first place in the Global Prodco category, and might even have won a twofer in the individual office categories had it not been for an absolutely stellar year for London's small but mighty
Gorgeous. No surprises on the directorial winner: Daniel Kleinman ran backwards all the way to the top spot.
Lastly, while our tabulations yielded some interesting surprises (such as Crispin racking up enough points from its Miami location to rank #6 in the Global Agency list), the nicest was the Agency Producer tally, in which nine out of the top 11 were female. With so much of this last year's discussion focusing on women in advertising, we thought it was a poetic and heartening sign for the future.
