Tiga> "Far From Home"
After taking the festival and awards circuit by storm with her incredible 2004 video for Japanese singer Yuki ("Sentimental Journey"), Tokyo's Nagi Noda found herself the subject of a fierce bidding war. A sizzling property, she eventually ended up at Partizan, and this clip for Montreal electro hotshot Tiga marks Noda's debut promo from her new outpost. Boasting the same brightly watercolored set designs as "Sentimental Journey", as well as a similar one-take conceit, this is a strong opening salvo that reveals the director/art director to have one of the most refined and interesting visual palettes in the game today. Wolf Parade> "Modern World"
Created by Tel Aviv director/visual artist Adam Bizanski (he of last year's artful Shins promo "Pink Bullets"), "Modern World" is an immaculately detailed stop-motion piece that ranks head and shoulders above its contemporaries for care and craft. It casts the members of Wolf Parade as workers in a factory who toil on the assembly line by day and bash out songs as the factory house band by night; that is until the factory outsources their band duties to a more efficient machine, sending them purposeless into the street. A great concept executed with style and charm to spare. [Label: Sub Pop Recordings; Director: adambizanski.com]
Hot Chip> "Boy From School"
London's Hot Chip follow the Nima Nourizadeh-directed green screen extravaganza "Over And Over" with a similarly process-minded clip from Garth Jennings. "Boy From School" follows an army of set designers as they arrange a multitude of ingredients - including Jello, sand, woodchips, inflatable animals and even the band members themselves - strategically across a massive warehouse floor. While the band lie subserviently in their marks, the designers complete the set around them, and a closing crane shot reveals the tableau from 50 feet in the air. A great payoff.
