Tim Kentley, XYZ Studios

Winner: Motion Graphics/Designers

JUST THE FACTS: Age - 30; Hometown - Melbourne, Australia; Education - Studied graphic communication at Swinburne University; Employ - founded XYZ Studios in 2003

WELL, YOU KNOW HIS NAME IS TIM, AND HE LIKES TO DO DRAWINGS: "I had ADHD as a kid and the only way my parents could keep me still was with a pen and piece of paper. So I always knew I'd go into a creative direction."

HOW HE GOT INTO ANIMATION: While working for local graphic designer Andrew Hoyne, an animation job came into the studio that no one else had time for. "I thought I'd give it a go and I really liked it. I decided I'd rather do 25 drawings per second rather than just one drawing on a poster so I taught myself how to do it."

HIS FAVORITE CARTOON CHARACTER: "I could draw Garfield perfectly. I once did my own series of comics and asked Jim Davis if I could continue drawing Garfield when he died." Sadly, 12-year-old Tim received no reply.

BEST WORK: Honda's "I Want One" for Wilson Everard. An unseen child makes vroom-vroom sound effects as a pencil drawing comes to three-dimensional life. The kid-size minibike jumps over flame-covered ramps and pops wheelies without ever leaving the lined sheet of foolscap. "I remember how I used to draw and get really intense and scribble everything in really hard. I thought it'd be really cool to take that technique of how a kid colors and use that for the look," he says, of the hybrid animation modeled in 3D and finished with a hand-done rendering technique. He's also been tapped for two years running to create striking and flowing designs for the AGIdeas Design Foundation.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC: "Personally sound is not my thing. I know what I like but I'm pretty tone-deaf and can't design my own. Fortunately, we live in this mad apartment with two guys out back and they're all DJs and one of them is a sound composer. He does a lot of work for us."

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE: "Feature work is somewhere we'd like to go," says Kentley of XYZ. "We're not a publicly listed post-production facility - we're an artist studio that's very passionate about what we do. We'd definitely like to push our ideas into the film standard where you're contributing to culture and commenting on it. That would be the ultimate realization of my creative career."
