Mogwai> Friend Of The Night
To the more attention deficit disordered among us, this shadowy clip for Scottish blast-rockers Mogwai might register as a bit of a snooze upon first blush. But after multiple viewings, Woof Wan-Bau's arresting images and painstakingly detailed set designs become more apparent, and the video's crisp whites, deep reds and countless textures begin to pop through the darkness. With its oral and blood fixations, "Friend Of The Night" is vaguely reminiscent of Matthew Barney's film work, just not nearly as inscrutable. Still a young director, Wan-Bau continues to improve exponentially with each clip. [Label: Matador; Prodco: Nexus Productions]

Secret Machines> Lightning Blue Eyes
One of two accomplished Patrick Daughters videos released last month (the other: Yeah Yeah Yeahs' desert fever setpiece, "Gold Lion"), "Lightning Blue Eyes" is a rarity - a performance-narrative hybrid that actually works. True to the blueprint he laid out on 2003's YYY standout "Maps", Daughters once again favors slow, languid tracking shots over jerky camera movements and quick edits. Shot in rich B&W, he snakes the camera through the crowd and around the stage, giving us long looks at the surrounding characters and the subplots that play out while the band perform. Elegantly done and deceptively simple. [Label: Warner; Prodco: Black Dog/RSA]

Autechre> Pro Radii (Spec)
For the past two decades, techno legends Autechre have made music so syncopated and heavily textured that they've practically inspired an entire video genre. While the abstract visuals that have typically accompanied their work appear to have fallen out of favor with everyone but the hardcore CGI and IDM nerd demo, this spec from German design student Stefan Ringelschwandtner offers up a more organic interpretation. No heavy CGI - instead, it's all underwater textures, body parts, milky spores and foliage. Very Cunningham, but beautifully done nonetheless. [Label: Warp; Director: ringelschwandtner.com]
