Nicklas Andersson, Framestore CFC

Winner: Animators

JUST THE FACTS: Age - 23; Hometown - Piteå, Sweden; Education - Studied computer graphics at the University of Sweden; Employ - Framestore CFC in London since Oct. 2004.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: Although Andersson didn't complete his degree, his teacher's connections with London visual effects team Double Negative helped him along. "They needed some fresh people and I started working there and for Passion Pictures where the director set me up with my boss here at Framestore."

CATCHING THE BUG: As a keen seven-year-old, Andersson got turned on to animation by his brother who dabbled with computer graphics on the Commodore Amiga. By age 11, he was computer modeling and creating short animated films "mostly involving spaceships flying around the Grand Canyon, kind of like Independence Day."

BEST WORK: Renault Espace's "Hector's Life" lovingly follows the adventures of a thumb-sized cartoon character as he escapes the bounds of a newspaper comic strip and enters the vast outdoors. Meanwhile, Dairy Crest's "Cityside" has friendly woodland creatures shuffling in from every kitchen window to help a city mom clean up, and in the Chemical Brothers vid "Believe" a menacing, photoreal robot terrorizes an increasingly neurotic guy.

PERSONAL STYLE: "It's very natural with weight and physics in terms of the creatures and stuff like that," he says. "I don't like cartoony characters too much."

INSPIRATION: Andersson tries to keep within his own ideas before turning his attention to other references. "If I look to other work for inspiration first, I find my mind gets locked into what other people have done before." A perfectionist at heart, deadlines can be aggravating because "I change my mind so many times."

LITTLE-KNOWN FACT: Loves the movie Antz, but is scared to death of bugs, especially hornets. "There are really big ones in London."

FAMILY: His dad is a carpenter and his mom is a painter and a nurse. And some things never change: his brother is still a "computer nerd" and works for the government.

DREAM GIG: Working on a feature film with character animation. "There tends to be more creature and character stuff in commercials these days instead of film."

HOMEWORK: Whenever he's not rushing to meet deadlines at work, Andersson has a backlog of 15 short animations he's working on.
