Michael Long, Freelance director

Finalist: Directors

JUST THE FACTS: Age - 35; Hometown - Sarasota, Fla.; Education - Double BFA, Ringling School of Art & Design, Sarasota; Employ - Freelance; temporary representation from Smuggler since 2005.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: "Advertising's been my film school," says Long. With a background in graphic design and photography, in the late '90s he AD'd for various agencies, including Saatchi and Leo Burnett in Warsaw, Amsterdam and London. After eight years abroad, he landed his current "day job" as a CD at Publicis NY.

BEST WORK: With an improv track from a beatbox crew composed by Q Department, and a set of actors that could fake spitting beats, the scenario for Long's "Beatbox Family" for MTV came to life - boyfriend comes to girlfriend's house to find her family in an argument, unfolding purely in rapid-fire beats. "It's Guess Who's Coming To Dinner on acid."

SIGNATURE STYLE: Long's "actively avoiding trying to be pigeon-holed," building his reel with Smuggler on a project basis.

SO CAN HE BEATBOX?: "I had to learn quickly, but I still leave it to the pros."
