Modernista! senior producer Eric Voegele dishes on some of his favorite things: bidding his brains out, banging drums and Borat.
What's the most exciting reel you've come across lately?
Director Jaron Albertin, Soft Citizen, Toronto; New York and LA music house Robot Repair.
The best cost-cutting tip you've picked up over the years?
Embrace competitive bidding. If I have the time to do it, I'll bid my brains out. It keeps the numbers within reason and you get a ton of perspective on your project.
The best turndown line you've ever heard?
I have a great one that I can't share due to legal reasons.
The craziest pitch you've ever encountered?
It wasn't my job, but Jake Scott of RSA sent a guy in a bear-suit to Modernista! for the "Three Bears" Hummer spot. I thought that was top notch.
Your stress relief of choice?
We have a music room at Modernista! now. I'll go in there and bang on the drums until I'm spent.
The most memorable "act of God"?
I'm still thanking God that no one got run over by a tumbling AirStream, or fell off a 60-foot crane, or blew up in a backyard from shooting the Ratchet and Clank 2 campaign [with TBWA].
The most memorable display of diplomacy?
The 1st AD from the shoot I had in Brazil spoke English, Portuguese and a tribal language. The director was English, the crew was Brazilian, and the cast was an Amazonian tribe. We couldn't have shot a thing without her.
The most outrageous proposition anyone has made to you?
I wish someone would. I'm intrigued.
What's your dream production?
Something really subversive with PES.
What are you going to do when you grow up?
Replace Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes.
What makes you laugh?
Borat imitations.
What makes you shake your head?
Bad Borat imitations.
Eric Voegele is a senior producer at Boston-based Modernista! Prior to that, he spent six years at TBWA\Chiat\Day in Los Angeles producing award-winning work for Sony PlayStation.
