You may not know it, but the actual recipe for a trailer park doesn't involve scruffy Winnebagos or garden gnomes. Just a couple of fingers of Jack Daniels, some Southern Comfort and "a smack of lemonade" - at least according to the cocktail menu at Trailer Park - the first event hosted by the newly formed Toronto chapter of the AICE.
Run in cities like LA, NY, and Chicago, Trailer Park involved some friendly competition between Toronto's major edit shops as assistant editors were pit head to tail to see who could cut a snappier horror trailer version of The Graduate or turn The Matrix into a comedy.
It was a significant occasion for the Toronto editorial scene, as it marked a rare gathering of the community. "It speaks well that we play so nicely together. And it shows a real maturity in the way the industry has grown," said Mary Beth Odell, GM at Flashcut and the first president of the Toronto AICE.
The AICE presence in Toronto also marks its first foray beyond the US. "What's changed for us in Toronto is that it's just given us a reason to communicate with each other fairly often," says Kate Bate, EP at Relish.
But on this night, Trailer Park was more about Jack and Keanu than policy. At the end of the night, judges awarded Queleigh Sade of School Editing the top prize for her eerie version of The Graduate. Ralph Floro of Blue Highway also earned a trip to New York for turning Reeves from 'The One' into 'The Babysitter who has to pick up his little brother'.
