A look at the month's most notable work

Mountain Dew "Helicopter">For 40-plus years White Spy has been fighting Black Spy with a series of backhanded, clever and conniving traps. But never has it looked so good. Traktor has revived the comi-violent antics of these classic Cold War rivals in a perfectly surreal spot for Mountain Dew. The black-and-white over-the-top cartoon characters, and the set with its weird props and effects, all jump right out off the screen leaving the viewer wondering: is it entirely CG? Typically, Traktor leaves us to make up our own minds. Excellent sound effects and minimal, clunky music add to the comic effect.

Lynx "Getting Dressed"> While the underlying premise of this ad is that when faced with an appealing member of the opposite sex in, say, a supermarket, you best drop everything, fling your clothes around town and hit the sack, the execution is much more endearing. In this spot for Lynx's 24-hour deodorant a perfectly beautiful couple wake up in bed and start retracing their steps back to the store where they met - one piece of clothing at a time. The soundtrack - a folksy rendition of "Over the Rainbow" - is perfect, and the quality of the film is rich and warm. Lusty passion never looked so innocent.

Chiclets "Five Words that Sound Dirty But Aren't"> Masticate. C'mon, say it. It sounds dirty and you know it. That's the giggly side of our juvenile selves that Chiclets is trying to tap in "Dirty Words". Animated by Michael Overbeck of Wild Brain, anthropomorphic squares of gum each come forward to spout their sounds-like-it's-dirty utterance. It's a simple and playful concept for a brand that targets mostly teens. The four other would-be foul words? Uranus, cocktail, poo-poo platter and kumquat. Please forgive us as we regress into the corner and snigger.

Saturn "Pac-Man"> The world is a maze and the Saturn VUE is your Pac-Man in this nostalgic effort from Goodby. A clever play on the arcade favorite, the spot starts with a VUE spinning in a driveway before heading out to the streets, gobbling power pellets, people and groceries along the way. Nearly all effects were done in-camera: the spinning car was shot on a turning platform, and objects such as pellets and shopping carts were hung from wires. Though those with a keen eye should watch closely as one of the power pellets was actually done in CG "just to see if anyone could tell".

ADIDAS "BALL"> Much as we love to wallow in Lance Acord's cinematography and the sight of David Beckham doing pretty much anything, it's refreshing to see Adidas do something more - well - pure. This renegade spot shows a small boy in the back streets of LA scouring the alleys, dumpster diving, and tugging shreds of garbage off the barbed wire in his neighborhood, until he's amassed enough material to make his prized possession: a home-made soccer ball. Beautifully shot and edited, this understated ad could do a lot for Adidas's image by reminding us what's really important in life.
