Q+A: A quickie with an agency producer
Ogilvy & Mather, NY, producer Bé Garrett espouses the truth, the whole truth and nothing but... Paris
What's the most exciting reel you've come across lately?
Daniel Kleinman of Large, London.
The best cost-cutting tip you've picked up over the years?
Bid the spot out for what you believe it absolutely requires to be the spot you sold, as well as the best spot it can be.
Your best excuse for going over budget?
"The creative required the necessary overages in order for the spot to be what was boarded and more."
The best lie you've ever heard?
When a director at the pre-pro meeting says, "That's no problem. I'll shoot it several different ways on the day of the shoot."
Best lie you've ever told?
I don't lie. I come straight wit' no chaser.
The best way to woo a client?
Go out for an awesome pre-pro dinner, talk about the job very little, and give them as early a call time as possible.
Your toughest experience with a client?
A shoot in Australia where the weather days cost me more sleepless nights than all the other shoots in my career to date.
The craziest pitch you've ever encountered?
"We're going to do a spot with big black boxes and put them in different locations all around the world." The campaign turned out to be IBM's "Magic Box".
Best location for shooting abroad?
Paris. The scenery, the food and the shopping can't be equalled.
Most outrageous proposition anyone has made to you?
"Could you pay for this even though it's our fault we went over?"
What's your dream production?
A-list director, great creative, cooperative client, where money isn't a concern. It never happens.
Garrett joined Ogilvy in 1998 and has produced spots for IBM, Lotus, American Express, and Motorola. Previously, he was a freelance assistant producer at Foote, Cone, Belding, NY.
