MINI missing but "Lamp" shines

After Crispin Porter + Bogusky's strong showing with the MINI Cooper at The One Show, the Clio awards left people surprised at the little car's absence of accolades. Still, CP+B was consoled with top honors for Ikea "Lamp", directed by Spike Jonze and described as "one of those ideas that changes the whole landscape" by DDB, Chicago, chair/CCO Bob Scarpelli, who chaired the Clio jury.

The ad berates the viewer for sympathizing with an old lamp left out in the rain. "You feel a little uneasy after you see it, and that's great," Scarpelli said.

MINI's parent company, BMW, fared much better, after a no-show at the Cannes Lions last summer. It scooped up a Gold Campaign Clio for its Internet-based long-form series by Fallon, MN.

Milan-based Peugeot spot "The Sculptor", by Euro RSCG Mezzano Costantini, tied BMW for Gold in the auto category.

The Clio jury named DDB, Chicago, Agency of the Year, chiefly for its work on Bud Light beer, and DDB Worldwide Agency Network of the Year. Anheuser-Busch grabbed Advertiser of the Year honors, proving that "edginess doesn't always come from the margin", according to Clio exec director Andrew Jaffe.

And Peru and Guatemala scored their first ever Clios, both Silver. Publicis Asociados won in the Home Products category for the Inti Matches spot, "Candle", while Ogilvy, Guatemala, won in the Media Promotion category for Prensa Libre's "Stadium".
