Ridley Scott shoots Samuel Jackson
by: Apr 1, 2003 Print

ON SET - BBH, London has wrapped a two-day LA shoot on a Barclays campaign featuring Samuel L. Jackson as directed by RSA owner Ridley Scott.

The six new spots follow on from last year's campaign, also starring Jackson but helmed by Jonathan Glazer. They're designed to show how UK financial institution Barclays can better manage your money in a business world of confusing jargon.

"Barclays will be seen as a bank [that] knows what it's talking about," says Marc Hatfield, one half of BBH's creative team alongside Pete Bradly.

One spot, "Joke", sees Jackson spout wise words on finance in the form of a joke to show that Barclays is fluent on all financial topics - even divorce.

Shot at the LA Amphitheater to convey a staged effect, "Joke" shows Jackson recounting the tale of a man who asks his wife what she wants for her birthday. He offers a sports car, a Tiffany diamond necklace and a first-class cruise around the world - yet she refuses every generous offer. The man is perplexed, asking what exactly she wants. "I want a divorce!" comes the reply. "Hell, wasn't thinking of spending that kind of money," wisecracks Jackson as he walks out of frame.

The campaign, airing this spring in the UK, will be sliced by Jim Weedon through Peepshow Post,London. DP was Bob Richardson (Platoon, Natural Born Killers, Tarantino's hotly awaited Kill Bill).
