Special Report: New in New York
Welcome to The Now
by: Dec 1, 2002 Print

The time is now for Owen Plotkin, Nancy Finn and Nelson Leonard, who recently launched their independently owned editorial house The Now Corporation.

The company was incorporated in late October and is located in a "sun-drenched, 8,000-square-foot loft space" in NY's Flatiron District. Plotkin serves as president/editor, Finn as VP/exec producer, and Nelson as VP/editor. Now Corp. runs five Avids and exclusively represents editors Jesse Reisner and Jane Keller.

"I've been wanting to do this for a long time," says Plotkin. "We're a great team and we know each other. And Nelson and I respect each other's work. We're excited about 'the now'."

Plotkin says the current strategy is to build on the core business model, which is to be a creative editorial shop. "We want to continue to add editors that will further enhance our reputation, and be the kind of people who are driven to be the best." Beyond that, Plotkin adds, the plan is to expand into other regions and to increase the spectrum of services offered to clients.

The focus of the company is commercials and advertising, but long form is not ruled out for Now. "Our move into long form will be a natural growth with our advertising partners," Plotkin says.

Only days into the venture, the company was booked for the first month and a half. Recent projects include a launch package for Staples from newly appointed agency Martin/Williams, MN, a four-spot Life Cereal job from Chicago's Element 79 Partners, plus work from Deutsch and Spike DDB.

The entire Now staff were previously at New York editorial boutique Editing Concepts (a division of parent company Editing Concepts Inc.). The boutique closed following the team's departure.

"It was time to leave," Plotkin says on the timing of the Now Corp's launch. "Change can be difficult, but if you embrace the now, change is a breeze. And living in the moment helped me through some difficult times with the start-up. Focusing on our name and what it meant was amazing.

"It's been a long time coming," adds Plotkin. "The time is now to have complete control and to grow."
