Top Spots
A look at the month's most notable work
PARDON?
Saatchi & Saatchi, London and bicoastal hungry man built a board room in which every time an attendee opens their mouth, an orgasmic groan escapes. This :90 spot is destined for cinemas, which is a frightening thing. Imagine the prospective terror of a two-story-tall Spanish tea woman (who bears a startling resemblance to your great aunt) moaning: "Eat the peach. Eat it." Or her suggestion that you "Lick my lily." Not enough tea in the world, my friend. Still, memorable spots you can enjoy in the comfort of a darkened theatre.

FLEXING MUSCLE
Some spots struggle against format and time, becoming bigger than just 'ads.' With an orchestra warm- up for a soundtrack, Nike "_before" captures both the intensity of athletes and the ferocity of sport in a relatively simple :30. A Park Pictures production for W+K, "_before" blends clips of heroes and amateurs; professional footage and DVcam; past with present. In the end, shoe pitch ends up camouflaged by the purity of the moment before competition. Who wouldn't want a pair of red shoes if they could transport you to nirvana?

LONG LIVE ROCK
Set to the organ-bashing stylings of Uriah Heep, "Easy Living" is a two-minute foray into the world of '70s Rock-God excess. Viewers follow an overweight Ozzy-esque rocker on the down-swing through a binge of drinking, sex, debauchery and foot massages. The real message from Harry Nash and TBWA/PHS, Helsinki: insurance ads don't have to suck twinkies. An insurance company brave enough to risk their image on a man who repeatedly projectile vomits at a urinal he's also using gets my bucks every time. Rock on.

BARNYARD ODDITY
So what you've got here is your basic shower scene: close up on face. Head toss. Slow-mo. Udder shot... That's right, udder shot. This cheesy parody of the gal-in-the-shower ad for the California Milk Advisory Board replaces beefcake with beef. "Sprinkler" sees a bovine hamming it up as leering steers look on. There are so many good things about this effort - the music ("Lady" by Styx - absolutely brilliant), the soft focus... Sister spots feature voices of Dan Castellanata (The Simpsons) and Bobcat Golthwait.

TOUCHING MOMENTS
The only thing more annoying than people who consistently do great work are those who do it in volume. Case in point: Levi's and BBH. From BBH, London comes "Rub Yourself," three :30s of people behaving erotically, if not unhygienically. Stunning visuals, an emotive static-filled soundtrack and rather attractive people in jeans rubbing their bits against things. Wonderful. And in NY, BBH tackled "Atlas Bakery" and "French Dictionary"... Not sure what any of this has to do with jeans, but hell, it's good stuff.
