Leo Burnett, Chicago CD Mark Tutssel looks into the Cannes crystal ball
by: Jun 1, 2002 Print

"Xbox 'Champagne' is the one that everyone will be taking about," says Leo Burnett, Chicago creative director Mark Tutssel. "The execution is remarkable, the music and sound design adds to the drama, and it's an unforgettable commercial."

Offering to put on the cap of the Amazing Kreskin (or perhaps Carnac the Magnificent), Tutssel kindly agreed to play soothsayer for a day predicting what he thinks will fare well at Cannes.

Tutssel forsees that Nike "Tag" and "Shade Runner" from Weiden + Kennedy, Portland directed by Frank Budgen and Tom Carty of London's Gorgeous are sure to collect awards. However, he predicts that Reebok may give Nike a run for its money with its hilarious Budgen-directed "Sofa" out of Lowe Lintas.

Another potential rivalry will be that of "Crazy Legs" versus "Odyssey"; TBWA\Chiat\Day, San Fran and Spike Jonze versus BBH, London and Jonathan Glazer. Similarly, the gloves may come off in the PSA ring with the affecting "Ketchup Soup" from BBH and Joe Pytka and NSPCC "Cartoon" from Saatchi, London and Budgen.

Fox Sports "Leaf Blower/Nail Gun/Boat" from TBWA\Chiat\Day directed by Baker Smith of LA's Harvest Films is sure to feel the golden touch according to Tutssel. Other frontrunners on his card include Stella "Doctor" from Lowe, London and Ivan Zacharias of London's Stink, "Sea Aquarium" from Cliff Freeman and Partizan's Traktor, and John Hancock "Premature" from Hill Holiday, Boston and @radical's Errol Morris.

At the end of the day, Tutssel expects that Nike "Tag/Shade Runner," XBox "Champagne," Levi's "Odyssey" and Fox Sports "Leaf Blower/Nail Gun/Boat" are the ones to watch.
