Veteran producer Alvaro Gorospe and director Yann Malka have teamed up to launch Madrid-based production company Garlic.
The pairing of former Remo Asatsu head of TV and the former orchestra-conducting director seems apt; both men are second-generation film and advertising (Malka's father operated a motion control/Photosonics studio, Gorospe's mother worked for Madrid agency Contrapunto).
"Yann's work has always been impressive. No one has a reel like his. That is because he is an artisan. True he uses technological tools (the Photosonics, Motion Control, 3D, flame) but working hard, painting each frame by hand, trying one way, then the other, then back all the other way... until it becomes what he calls something. Of course he finishes his works on schedule, but after many hours of trying things," says Gorospe of Malka.
"For me, working at an agency was good, because you get the chance to work with a wide range of production companies and directors, so you learn a lot. But again, most of the work is done by others (especially in Spain, where agencies don't do the post). I had the feeling that once a budget was approved and all the fun work began, it was my turn to take a step back and let them work until the PPM. Many agency producers don't feel this way, but I couldn't feel comfortable otherwise. Still, I felt that I was missing something and started to look for a choice on the other side (the wild side)!"
Garlic's first venture onto the wild side is a thus-far undisclosed project for Barcelona's S, C, P, F....
