British post/effects companies primed to invade Manhattan
by: May 1, 2002 Print

Given the volume of commercial work now crossing the Atlantic, it seems only natural that UK companies are making plans to open satellite offices and post space in the US.

That was certainly the message from companies comprising the UK Effects Group on a tour de force swing through New York on Mar. 18. In some cases, space is already being rented and companies are working feverishly to incorporate their firms into the New York scene.

The Tribeca Film Center, above Robert DeNiro's famed dining room the Tribeca Grill, was swarming with bubbly Brits, their eyes focused on assuring that the greenbacks keep flowing their way. As @radical.media's Jon Kamen pointed out in his speech, many of the attendees already enjoy fruitful relationships with Madison Avenue clients.

After all, with the digital age upon us, an increasing number of British post houses have their gaze set America. For many, the opportunity to plant themselves firmly in Gotham holds much appeal.

Meg Guidon of the British Film Office says that the whole idea behind the UK Effects Group is to raise the profile of British post companies. It is thanks, in part, to a certain desire on the part of the British Department of Trade and Industry to make their presence known in the US. The initiative is part of a combined effort alongside the British Film Commission.
