Untitled BC
In search of the high caliber creative, Toronto-
by: Feb 1, 2002 Print

The production company represents directors Wayne Craig, Tim Godsall, Robert Logevall, John Mastromonaco, David Tennant and Curtis Wehrfritz in the Canadian market. Untitled executive producer James Davis says the caliber of work created by Vancouver shops such as Palmer Jarvis DDB and ReThink cements the importance of having offices in British Columbia.

"It's really simple. Because of the lack of budgets, they can't throw money at things. They have to use strong, simple ideas," says Davis. "If you look at the ten best agencies in Canada, at least two and maybe three are in Vancouver; this is more of a move to align ourselves with them. It's a very local setup focusing on what we can do here, and not having to do the roadhouse thing. We've given ourselves a very conservative business plan. That said, the business climate in Vancouver is not great. It's not like there's a gold rush to get here right now, but we are in for the long haul."

As for Untitled's work, 2001 was a prolific year for the company. John Mastromonaco (who works through Bravo Zulu in the US) directed two spots for the Yorkdale Mall through Zig, both focusing on sexual liaisons interrupted by superior fashion sense; "Grumps" for Hallmark through Leo Burnett Toronto, wherein an old man's birthday is interrupted when his granddaughter recites an old fart poem; and two spots for Dentyne Ice through Bates focusing on the romantic ice-breaking capabilities of the chewy stuff. Wayne Craig had a massive year with spots for Junior Diabetes and an homage to trailer trash promoting AGF Mutual Funds in support of the Toronto International Film Fest, both through TBWA/Chiat/Day, Toronto; "Day Care," a Grand & Toy spot through Harrod + Mirlin with a child office labor bent; as well as spots for MSN.ca through MacLaren McCann, Minute Maid through Leo Burnett and Rogers NBA Sponsorship, also through MacLaren McCann. Wehrfritz directed a visually stunning and telling portrait of Toronto in a campaign for the Toronto Star through Enterprise as well as a tribute to all things small for the Canadian launch of the BMW Mini, with creative from Taxi.
