Epoch expands
by: Feb 1, 2002 Print

Bicoastal Epoch Films has expanded its roster with the addition of directors Matthew Badger and Tim Godsall.

Godsall, a Canadian, is represented by Toronto/Vancouver based Untitled. Badger joins the company following the closure of Epoch division Nocturnal Commercials. The company also recently signed Stacy Wall, a former Wieden + Kennedy creative director, previously directing via hungry man.

Godsall specializes in comedy and has directed numerous situational and spoofy spots for the likes of Eastern Bank, CD Now, Burton and VH1, as well as a popular Molson Canadian beer commercial depicting Canadian-US relations. Badger's work dwells in musical and visual pieces for clients such as Target, Oil of Olay, Filenes, Kleenex, Payless and Lever 2000, with dance numbers, including a DKNY spot featuring acclaimed choreographer Savion Glover, rounding out the reel. Wall's work combines comedy and the absurd, with a campaign for Crispy Crunch using the exact same script but highly varied situations to drive home the candy bar's versatility.

Jerry Solomon, executive producer at Epoch, says Badger left Nocturnal when he parted ways with then-partner Ian Hunter, and then moved over to the parent company.

Solomon says that Wall, who was developing TV content with hungry man, had worked with Epoch during his time at Wieden and joined the company to focus on commercial direction. Godsall's reel secured him a spot on the Epoch roster.

"It's part of this ongoing change in the business. We had a nice kind of five-person roster but with Anouk Besson joining in 2000, we've literally doubled our roster in the last 18 months," says Solomon.

"I think profit margins are down all over the place. With the economy and increased competitiveness, there are a lot of directors and not as many commercials being made. So, you either grow or retract, make your decision. You can make a one to three director shop and keep overhead down. To make the same money with a larger shop, you have to bill more. We decided to became more aggressive about it."

Godsall, Badger and Wall join a roster consisting of Anouk Besson, Paula Greif, Phil Morrison, Dewey Nicks and Jeff Preiss.
