Unzipping the twist
by: Jan 1, 2002 Print

Pepsi uncovers a new lemon-flavored Pepsi Twist soft drink in "Disguise," a new spot out of BBDO, New York, directed by Jonathan David of MJZ.

A patron walks into a restaurant to find Pepsi spokes-pixie Hallie Eisenberg chilling at the counter enjoying a can of brown fizzy. Surprised to see the commerical starlet, the fan exclaims, "Hey, that's Hallie Eisenberg drinking a Pepsi!" Unzipping both herself and her drink, Eisenberg quickly reveals that it's not a Pepsi but a Pepsi Twist she's drinking and that's she's not really a pre-pubescent chatterbox, but really the much more appealing Halle Berry. The fan is clearly excited, however Halle Berry informs her google-eyed onlooker that she's not really drinking Pepsi Twist, but rather the Diet version - and that, much to the his dismay, she's not really Halle Berry, but Barry Bostwick.

The visual effects team at Sight Effects created the seamless, albeit zippered, transitions from cutie to hottie to Bostwick using Maya Cloth. The footage of the actors unzipping themselves was shot live action; Hallie and Halle were filmed on blue screen to facilitate the unzipping effect while Barry Bostwick was shot on set.

Maya allowed the visual team to project skin tone and texture onto a CG model of the unzipping motion. "The model is of the head of the person and then we put the live action picture of the person on top of it. The interior is actually the model," says visual effects supervisor Melissa Davies of the process, noting that advancements in Maya Cloth allowed them to create natural folds in the shedding personage.

Sight Effects employed the talents of VFX supervisor Adrian Hurley, VFX producer Jeff Blodgett and VFX artists Chris Stevens and Michelle Steinau. Agency credits include executive creative director Jimmy Siegel, creative director Ron Palumbo and producer David Frankel. Darek Wolski was DP on the spot, Lisa Rich exec produced and Buzzy Cancilla produced, all from MJZ. Editorial was provided by Crew Cuts editor David Lee and assistant editor Martin Henson. Music was completed by Face the Music and audio post by Buzz, New York.
