What better visuals for a re-calibrated electro funk track than a transforming robot dancing its way through a collage of classic dance floor moves?
Playgroup's "Number One" was created by directing team H5 (Ludovic Huplain and Antoine Bardou-Jaquet) through Partizan Midi Minuit, Paris and Parisian post house Duran. Playgroup is top re-mixer Trevor Jackson's new project and the track is a smooth combination of '80s electro, fretless bass and vintage funky vocals. The promo shows the mecha-like transformation of a computer into a limber android demonstrating full moonwalk, backspin and Saturday Night Fever capabilities in a stylized digital dance space. The finished strut-bot required eight weeks of modeling, animation, rendering and color grading from the Duran team of 3D CGI modelers, who concentrated on endowing the robot with "human and sensual" movements. They worked from a 2D animatic constructed with extracts from videos, movies and concerts of such dancing icons as James Brown, Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai and Prince; both the dance moves and the sets were borrowed from these subjects. The 15-member effects team was lead by SFX supervisor Jacquemin Piel.
