Days before the host city for the 2008 Summer Olympics was announced by the International Olympic Committee, TBWA/Chiat/Day broke an eight spot "Celebrate Humanity" campaign hyping the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games.
Constructed from stock footage and geared toward communicating the warm and fuzzy global values embodied by the Olympics, each spot is a tribute to real athletes, their successes and spirit.
Actor Robin Williams voiced all the commercials, and three of the spots feature music by hip musical acts. "Bobsled," which chronicals the trials of the Jamaica's first bobsled team, features the Bob Marley track "Coming In From The Cold." "Citius Altius Fortius" has heavy snowboard/extreme sports overtones and is cut to the Daft Punk track "Harder Better Faster Stronger." "I Am An Olympian" also speaks to a youth audience and is scored by Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong." Elias Associates created all other music for the spots.
Creative director for the campaign was Lee Clow, who worked with creatives Chuck Monn, Mark Reichard, Dan Mountain, Rob Siltanen and Jeff Maki on the various spots. The agency producer for the campaign was Anh-Thu-Le; Dan Bootzin of Venice Beach Editoral cut the campaign. Post Modern Sound/POP was the recording studio.
