Despite a gluttonous-sounding handle, New York's Big Pig is actually all about sharing. Lead pig Jerry Winkowski is the one-man central hub/producer/co-writer at the center of an ever-expanding network of freelance composers in New York, Miami, Austin and Los Angeles.
"People who've been in the commercial business for 10 years tend to decide what the client wants and compartmentalize things," says Winkowski. "I'd rather go way outside the box and then come back in without preconceived notions. At a company with two or three staff guys, they tend to work on everything; a guy good at '70s rock can't always do hip-hop but he will do it because he owns the company."
Sending directions and QuickTime clips to the freelancers, Winkowski says he can easily get several cuts composed quickly and what's more, with an added touch of diversity. "With all these different writers, you also get more diversity," he says. "With different writers using different players in different studios, you avoid the sameness of always using the same engineer or musicians." Big Pig has recently composed for Bacardi, Excedrin, Fanta, Popeye's, MCI, Delta and Zest.
