The 1080/24P standard is one that has generated much interest in the long form and spot world recently. 24P is 24 frame per second, progressive (vs. interlaced), 16:9 aspect ratio, which is a film format, and therefore is being touted for flexibility in terms of capturing material that may be used in other formats, including NTSC, PAL and HDTV. In terms of manipulating material, 24P also has a number of advantages.
Avid will give a presentation at the SMPTE conference on Managing the Content Explosion with 24P Universal Editing and Mastering, discussing how to deal with 24P material. Avid's Michael Phillips is discussing the management of material within Avid systems, whether a Film Composer for offline, or universal mastering for 601 delivery, as well as preserving metadata - the creative decisions that were made handling the source material - and applying them to any necessary resolution thereafter, including HD.
